Tour de Fleece 2021: Days 1-23

The 2021 Tour de Fleece ended yesterday (July 18), and after 23 straight days of spinning yarn, I'm ready for a (small) break. My goal for this year's Tour was to sample some of my raw fleeces and work on raw fleece from the 'Shave 'em to Save 'em' project too. 


Breeds Spun: Shetland, Icelandic, Jacob/Columbia, California Red/Romeldale, CVM (California Variegated Mutant), CVM/Merino, Shropshire, Dorset Horn, Gulf Coast Native, BFL (Bluefaced Leicester), Navajo Churro, Florida Cracker, & Hog Island.


🐑Tour de Fleece, Days 1-23 : All from raw fleece (scoured/combed or carded) 13 sheep breeds. Yarn yield = 3,813 yards of singles; 850 grams (28.61 ounces) of wool. 🧶

Raw Fleece to Finished Object Workshop Series


Learn to process raw sheep fleece and make a finished object from it in this four part workshop series.


Class 1: Washing a raw fleece

Class 2: Prepping washed fleece for spinning

Class 3: Spinning fiber using drop spindle

Class 4: Choosing finished object for spun yarn (yarn calculations, pattern options, etc.) + dyeing yarn

Off the Loom: Gulf Coast Native Scarf (handspun yarn from raw fleece project)

First handwoven scarf from Gulf Coast Native raw fleece handspun yarn project.

This project took approx. 180 yards (67 grams) of handspun GCN yarn. It is very soft and has a lovely rustic texture.
